The 10 best-selling cigarettes in the U.S.

Our author has visited several states and has lived there for about two years. He brought us American cigarettes. There, tobacco is like tobacco – without impurities, veins, and even more chemistry, which is out of the question in the United States. They respect tobacco culture and keep the quality of cigarettes either high or medium-high. Cigarette prices are regulated on a state-by-state basis. For example, in the state of Virginia, all cigarettes will cost significantly less than in Washington or New York.

I had the idea to create a compilation of the top 10 best selling cigarettes in the United States. I will show you what cigarettes Americans actually smoke. I had to ask three friends who have lived in different cities – Memphis, Atlanta and Richmond – for statistics.

Marlboro cigarettes

Expectedly, Marlboro cigarettes are the most popular cigarettes in the U.S., outpacing their competitors in terms of sales by almost 1.5-2 times. Notably, young people prefer Marlboro Lights, while old-school smokers choose Marlboro in the classic red and white pack.

These cigarettes still use American Blend tobacco blend with a predominant amount of Burley. I have smoked American Marlboro and I can say that they are still the best cigarettes I have ever tasted in my life. But it is too expensive to order them from the USA.

Newport Cigarettes

Newport cigarettes are in great demand in the USA. I remember that they were brought to Russia back in the 80s. The cigarette brand was founded as early as 1957 and belongs to the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. Americans mostly buy menthol Newport cigarettes, but in addition to them there are also classic versions of these cigarettes without menthol. In fact, Newport cigarettes control the “menthol” market in the United States, taking 35% of all sales.

Camel cigarettes

As the years go by, Camel cigarettes are still among the best-selling and most popular cigarettes in the United States among smokers. This brand first appeared on the market 110 years ago. The cigarettes gained their fame thanks to the original blend of tobacco, which includes not only Virginia, but also a blend of Turkish tobacco. This blend gave the cigarettes a spicy, sour flavor with notes of dry grass and roasted nuts.

Pyramid cigarettes

On the list of the most sought-after cigarettes in the US, you can’t help but add the Pyramid brand. They are much cheaper than the above mentioned cigarettes, which makes them popular and one of the best-selling in many states. Production of this brand was not taken up until 1988. At one time they used the Egyptian theme with the image of pyramids and desert as marketing.

Basic cigarettes

In this selection you will not find cigarettes like Parliament, Kent, Winston and others. Why not? Because they are rarely smoked in the USA. At the end of the 70s, Basic cigarettes were launched.

In just 30 years, the brand became one of the top five best-selling cigarettes in the United States, reaching number four in 2005. Today, the situation hasn’t changed. They still sell well.

Doral cigarettes

Many of the cigarette brands in this review were introduced within the last 50-60 years. For example, Doral cigarettes began to be sold in 1969. The owners of this brand positioned Doral as premium cigarettes, but they didn’t sell well. Then they changed tactics and started selling them at a reduced price, targeting the category of smokers with low and middle income. The tactic worked. Today, Doral cigarettes are sold in almost every state at a low, affordable price.

American Spirit cigarettes

In the USA, this brand is very popular. The brand is relatively young and is still being formed. It is noteworthy that the company was founded in 1982 by Bill Drake, who was personally interested in tobacco growing and even published a book dedicated to this craft. Today there are about 17 different variants of American Spirit cigarettes.

Pall Mall Cigarettes

Above I told you about Doral cigarettes. Well, at one time this brand was a favorite of the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. But at some point they put the brand on the back burner and started developing the Pall Mall brand. For the European market, the same cigarettes are still made by British American Tobacco. In the current realities in the U.S. sales volumes of Pall Mall and Camel are almost the same.

L&M Cigarettes

The L&M brand of cigarettes first appeared on the market in 1952. At first, this brand found success in the United States. Then they became “crowded” and entered the world market. No one expected that by the year 2000 L&M cigarettes would be in the top 5 in terms of sales in Europe and Asia, surpassing many brands.

It’s impossible to say exactly what made these cigarettes famous. Many praise them for their consistent tobacco blend without any flaws. Just think about it, in 2016, Philip Morris produced 97 billion cigarettes or almost 5 billion packs that sold out briskly all over the world, including the United States.

Eagle 20’s cigarettes

Among the well-selling and extremely cheap cigarettes in the United States is Eagle 20’s. As the Americans themselves say, this brand is designed for people on a tight budget. Does this mean that Eagle 20’s uses cheap, mediocre tobacco?

There is enough tobacco in the US to supply almost all brands with good to medium quality raw material. They can be found in both the classic King Size format and non-filter (non-filter).
