Plain packaging wrong for cigarettes

During the federal election, the Liberal Party of Canada ran on a platform committing to evidence-based decision-making and a willingness to listen to Canadians.

These words were widely heralded in the Canadian media as signifying a new evidence-based approach to policy.

The tobacco industry knew that the government intended to look at plain packaging for tobacco products and we expected, consistent with the government’s commitment, an open discussion and debate about what those changes would mean.
